Long Time Running...

Well, It has been a while. Great to see you.

It has been some time since my last post, and I think its time for an update!

There has been quite a few events since my last post, most which have kept me from working on this story I love. From comic conventions, to commissions, to trials for some publishers, I've been kept really busy.

My thoughts are always with this story though. One I cant wait to share with you. In this time, I've been able to work on slight script details and character concepts, all which will be shared soon. Unfortunatley I'll be completing a few more commissions, including some cover/pin up work in the coming weeks, but hope to have some ground made up with MERCER in the coming months.

Its exciting making this comic, as unlike feature films, I have an unlimited budget and can add as many special effects and action scenes as I like, so this book will be lots of fun..

I feel my art has also improved, and will flex some artistic muscle more than ever real soon.

Stay tuned!!!!

THE TITLE!

Hey ya'll!!!

I'm excitied to announce that I have received the logo for my comic, MERCER: The Pursuit of Honor (LOOK UP^^^^!!!)

After a few weeks of deliberation and tweaks to the image it has finally come out the way I envisioned it.

I knew I wanted something like this, but I did need clarity. I achieved this by having a few different concepts done. The font was always the same as I really liked it, but the look went from being 'Duke Nukem' inspired to very Call of Duty, in green with green and black infrared-like lines running through the text.

What we needed though was something that encapsulated the feel of the story, the grit combined with action and thrill/suspense of the storyline, and I believe we did it.

I think JOSH AITKEN has done an amazing job!

I'd love to hear what you guys think!

See you guys soon..

QUICKIE..

Just a quick one this week...

Apologies for not posting last week, and not providing you with anything great this week (I like to post on Thursdays), but I promise you I'm still working away.

While I haven't done much drawing at all, Ive been doing some work on the story, gathering reference, and putting together ideas for future covers. I havent pinpointed exactly what I want in the covers, but im trying to find a theme that will fit for all the issues.

Ive also seen some preliminary logos for the MERCER title designed by JOSH AITKEN, and theyre off to a nice start. Some edits will be done, however I'm expecting to debut it real soon. I've received the query from writer JASON TUDOR and its sounding nice.

I'm also getting the pages lettered, again by Josh, and will preview them in future posts! So look out!

Next week I'll have much more to show so please check back!

Be good!

MERCER: The Making of a Comic Book Cover

So, getting back on track...

You deserve two posts this week as I was unable to do one last week. Here's the second :) ;

After my first two initial character sketches, and countless hours working out the details of the story, I felt it was time to do a pin up of the comic. Something that stood out, told a story in itself, and looked cool.

I had a clear picture of what I wanted, and began the initial sketch. This one was done at A5 size. (Picture 1)

I then copied it and blew it up to A3, then light boxed it onto a comic art board (Picture 2)

When I completed this, it was over to the talented Ander Zarate (http://zaratus.deviantart.com/) to work his magic with the colors.

When an artist (or atleast me) draws a picture they sometimes have a clear and precise view of what they intend the final colors to look like. To be honest, sometimes its not entirely clear, but I know what I want when I see it. This sometimes means re-work. This one was was clear to me, and was only re-worked once, and then I asked the background to be lightened as I wanted our hero MERCER to 'pop'. (Picture 3)

I think Ander did an amazing job.

Hope you like it!

...

I created this blog to document the process of my comic book Mercer. But if it's ok with you, I'm going to stray a little off topic for one post.

At 4.20pm on Thursday 16th February, I received some unexpected news, and my life was thrown into limbo. Everyone goes through their fair share of hurt, in one way or another. I have definitely experienced some of my own, but not like this, and never thought I'd be in this same position once again.

They say life changes every 7 or so years. I'm definitely not the person I was at 21. That guy was, well, 21 (mentally closer to 16 :) ). Funnily, I still had the same dream, but no clue of how to get there. In fact, I didn't even know what I wanted out of life, besides of course, a career as an artist.

Those things seem a little clearer for me now. In the past year I've realised what I want. I've gained a sense of clarity, now it is the time to simply work on getting there.

Though as I mentioned, the events of that Thursday were unexpected. It left me feeling empty, and I'm left finding myself all over again. Only this time I still know what I want, I just need to find a way to obtain it, in some form or another.

My advice to you all? Find out who you are, and what you want to achieve in this lifetime, and give up nothing for it. Never waver, and never place it second, not even for the person you love. Because if they love you, they'll stick with you no matter how hard it gets. Once you've found you, and achieved what you set out to, then let love in. If you are in the rare position that you have someone who loves you and grows with you through time, and you form a great team, then I say to you, don't ever take it for granted. Appreciate it. Hold onto it.

I've been thinking about Steve Jobs' 2005 Stanford Commencement speech where he says;

'You can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.'

To be honest I don't know where this fits with me, and I don't know what the future holds. Im trying to connect the dots but they don't make sense just yet. Im sure they will. I am definitely not the type of person to move backwards, and always look forwards. But in my recent past I see lots of good. Some great. And if that was to ever come back into my life again, I will consider it. But it'll have to begin with a crawl, until it can begin to walk.....

I want to thank all of you who have begun following this blog, and/or taken to the time to read it. Or simply taken the time to speak to me this past week. I appreciate it so much.

Love,

Dan

THE BEST FRIEND..

So we've introduced JOHN MERCER, and now here is his partner and good friend, NATHAN KILLGORE.

KILLGORE, nicknamed 'Killer', is also an ex-NAVY SEAL, and was selected alongside Mercer to undertake BUD/S training (Basic Underwater Demolition School/SEAL), a gruelling 25 week course that pushes the body to its physical and mental limits. It is aimed at producing graduates who have an enhanced repertoire of SEAL skills, ready for use upon arrival at an operational SEAL team.

They were both members of SEAL TEAM 7 for four years, leading their team into worn torn areas of Iraq searching for weapons of mass destruction and intel.

Although both highly skilled, they will be tested and pushed to their limits with an invisible enemy neither are ready for.

THE MAIN MAN

So after I found a writer it was time to work out story details, and I could also get to the fun part; the characters!

The main protagonist is named JOHN MERCER. An ex Navy Seal with an impeccable track record. Highly skilled and trained, who lead his team into the Iraqi green zone in 2003 in search of weapons of mass destruction. He is now retired, living in southern California. For the time being.....

This pic was to simply get the overall style/flavor down. His face will slightly change, and his outfit is not solid yet, but will be a variance of this right here.

Enjoy

THE NEXT STEP....

In the last blog I mentioned how it all began, and when the idea came into mind.

The next step was to start fleshing out the actual story. I continued adding scenes, different events, and how I'd make every action have a reaction. I initially thought I'd write this one myself. I did some research to learn just what made a good story good; the structure, the whys?/hows?/whens?, and especially the characters.

It was in this time when I came up with the underlying theme of the story; What drove these characters? What is the motivation for the story? This is where the subtitle comes in; The Pursuit of Honor.

After around 2-3 weeks, I realised no matter how much research I had done, and how hard I tried to write a story, it just simply isnt that simple! I decided to search for a suitable writer, and placed an advertisment on an art forum I frequent; www.digitalwebbing.com. I was absolutley shocked at the response I got. I received approximatley 80 emails from aspiring writers. Some published in the world of comics, others novels and/or childrens books, and others simply very talented unpublished writers.

It was a huge effort. The only way I found it possible to decide who was suitable, was to choose out of the best samples, and ask them to do a quick and rough take on a scene I had laid out. After I had received them all, it was clear from the moment I read not only his 5 page script, but also his ideas and insight, that JASON TUDOR was the perfect fit.

Jason is a veteran of the US Air Force, a journalist, and a published writer who has brought his intelligence and experience into MERCER, giving the story and characters life and depth.

It was time to get to work!

ASAHI...

Hello, and welcome!

This has been a long time coming, and there has been a lot of work done on my creator owned comic book MERCER thus far, and im happy to be able to share it with you over time with posts on this blog.

Though first I'd like to share with you the very beginning...where did the idea for MERCER come from??

The answer to that question is rather an unfulfilling one though; I dont know! haha.

To be honest, I remember sitting on the train on the way home from work stuck in my own creative mind. It was approximately 1 and a half years ago. I had been constantly thinking about another title I was working on with my brother, and when that started to lag I started thinking about new ideas and wrote them down into my iPhone 'Notes' app. I began by simply asking myself, if I could pick up any kind of book at the comic shop, what would I want to read? What kind of story would have me walking back every month? What would leave me talking about it?? And also, if it were adapted as a movie would I watch it?

Then I began actually watching it unfold in my mind like I was watching scenes from a movie. It definitely wasnt all entirely clear, but I saw specific scenes, the characters, and had the concept of the story down in that instant. Of course, it needed lots of work, but I knew what I wanted, and it felt right. The name also came to me on this train trip. I wanted something slick and fitting, and it was a name I had once heard and thought I'd use as a character one day (funny how that happens!). Thus MERCER was born.

So here is the beginning, or rise of the sun, and im hoping you'll take this journey with me, waiting for the day we get to see this comic on the stands of your local comic shop.
